General


There are two kind of messianic prophecies in the Old Testament:
  1. Promises kept in the New Testament. Some scholars say that it contains over 300 promises with fulfillments in the New Testament.
  2. Interpretation of a person, event, or institution as a prefiguring or foreshadowing of this in the New Testament, see Typology.
The Old Testament was written hundreds of years before Jesus appeared on Earth. These prophecies that Jesus fulfilled prove the divine origin of the Old Testament. They also prove that Jesus is indeed Messiah. Jesus himself said that the scriptures testify about him (John 5:39, 46–47). See also 60 Prophecies of Messiah.

Messiah is a Hebrew word meaning anointed. The Greek word Christ means the same thing. Other words for Jesus is:

Messiah would be born of a woman and defeat Satan (Gen (1 Mos) 3:15).
He must be a human male. It's consistent with a virgin birth. Jesus was crucified and died but 
later resurrected. Fulfilled in Mat 1:20, Gal 4:4, Heb 2:14, Col 2:15.

Messiah would be an offspring of Abraham (Gen (1 Mos) 12:3b, 22:18). God would also bless those who bless the Jews, and those who dishonor the Jews would be cursed. Fulfilled in Mat 1:1, Luk 3:34, Gal 3:8, 16, 18, Acts 3:25. 

Messiah would be an offspring of Isaac (Gen (1 Mos) 17:19, 21:12). 
Fulfilled in Mat 1:2, Luk 3:34, Rom 9:7, Heb 11:18. 


Messiah would be an offspring of Jacob (Num (4 Mos) 24:17). A star will rise.

Messiah would be an offspring of Judah (Gen (1 Mos) 49:10). 
Fulfilled in Heb 7:14, Mat 1:2, Luke 3:33.

Messiah would be an an offspring of Jesse (father of king David
(Isaiah 11:1). Jesse was the son of Obed, who was a son of Boaz and Ruth,

Messiah would be an an offspring of king David (2 Sam 7:12–13, 16, Isaiah 9:6–7,
Jer 23:5–6, Mat 22:41–45), see Whose Son Is Messiah?
Fulfilled in Mat 1:6, Luke 1:32–33, 3:31. 

Messiah's throne would be anointed and eternal (Psalm 45:6–7
(7–8 in some translations), Dan 2:44). Fulfilled in Luk 1:33, Heb 1:8–12.

Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2, see especially in LXX).
Fulfilled in Mat 2:1–6, Luke 2:4–7.

Messiah would be born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14). This is better described
in the Septuagint version of the Old Testament (Septuagint: Virgin,
Masoretic: Young woman (most translations use the word Virgin)),

Fulfilled in Mat 1:21–23, Luke 1:26–35, 2:6–7, 11–12.

Messiah would spend time in Egypt (Hosea 11:1). Fulfilled in Mat 2:14–15. 

A massacre of children would happen at Messiah's birthplace (Jer 31:15 (LXX)).
Fulfilled in Mat 2:16–18. 

A messenger would prepare the way for Messiah (Isaiah 40:35, Mal 3:1).

This messenger (John the Baptist) would come in the power of Elijah (Mal 4:5–6),

Messiah would be a priest after the order of Melchizedek (Psalm 110:4). 
Fulfilled in Heb 5:56, see Melchizedek in The Book of Hebrews.

Messiah would be declared to be the Son of God (Psalm 2:7). 
Fulfilled in Mat 3:1617, Acts 13:33, Heb 1:5, see the virgin birth.

Messiah would be praised by little children (Psalm 8:2 (3 in some translations)).

Messiah would perform miracles (Isaiah 35:56).

Messiah would teach parables (Isaiah 6:9–10, Psalm 78:2–4). 
Fulfilled in Mat 13:10–16, 34–35, Mark 4:10–12, Luke 8:9–10, John 12:37–41,

Messiah would be the chief cornerstone (Psalm 118:22).
Fulfilled in Mat 21:42, Acts 4:11, 1 Pet 2:7.
Jesus was and is the only way to salvation (John 14:6),

Messiah would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9).
Fulfilled in Mat 21:1–9, John 12:14–15, see The Triumphal Entry
in Jesus' Last Days before his Crucifixion.

Messiah would be betrayed by a friend (Psalm 41:9 (10 in some translations)).
Fulfilled in John 13:18, Luk 22:47–48.

Messiah would be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12).
Fulfilled in Mat 26:14–16.

Messiah's prize money was to be used to buy a potter's field (Zechariah 11:13).
Fulfilled in Mat 27:9–10.

Messiah would be abandoned by his disciples (Zechariah 13:7).

Messiah would be falsely accused (Psalm 35:11).
Fulfilled in Mark 14:57–59.

Messiah would be silent to those who accused him (Isaiah 53:7).

Messiah would be beaten, mocked, and ridiculed 
(Isaiah 53:4–5, Psalm 22:6–7 (7–8 in some translations)).

Messiah would be hated without cause (Psalm 35:19, 69:4 (5 in some translations)).
Fulfilled in John 15:24–25.

Messiah would pray for his enemies (Psalm 109:4). Fulfilled in Luk 23:34a.

Messiah would be crucified with criminals (Isaiah 53:12).

Messiah would be given vinegar to drink (Psalm 69:21 (22 in some translations)).
Fulfilled in Mat 27:34, John 19:28–30.

The bones of Messiah won't be broken (Exo (2 Mos) 12:46, Psalm 34:20
(21 in some translations)).

Messiah would rise from the dead (Psalm 16:10, 49:15 (16 in some translations). Fulfilled in Mat 28:2–7, Acts 2:22–32, see The Resurrection of Jesus.

Messiah would ascend into God's Heaven (Psalm 68:18 (19 in some translations)).
Fulfilled in Eph 4:8–10, Acts 1:6–11.

Messiah would sit at the right hand of God (Psalm 110:1). Fulfilled in

Messiah would be a Prophet


There would be a prophet like Moses, great in miracles 
(Deu (5 Mos) 18:15–19, 34:10–12). Fulfilled in John 4:19, 6:14, 7:40, 9:17,
Acts 3:22–23). Jesus performed several miracles, see Miracles of Jesus

This prophet was to do the will of God the Father (Deu (5 Mos) 18:18b).

The Jews wrongly thought that this prophet and Messiah would be two different persons (John 1:19–21). Jesus fulfilled both of them at his first coming.
