The Parable of the Hidden Treasure
Jesus told this parable: "The kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." (Mat 13:44).
The field represents the world.
The treasure is the followers of Christ.
and picked it up, it would belong to his master, the owner of the field; but here
the man is careful not to pick up the treasure until he has purchased the field.
The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price
Jesus told this parable: "The kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant
looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value,
he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." (Mat 13:45–46).
The merchant is Jesus. The pearl of great value is the followers of Christ,
borne out by irritation and persecution, as pearls are created in nature.
To the ancient peoples, a pearl was the loveliest of all possessions;
that means that the kingdom of Heaven is the most beautiful in the world.
It seems crazy for a merchant to sell everything he owned for a single pearl,
but to this merchant it was well worth it. It shows how much he valued
this precious pearl, and how much Jesus values his people.
Jesus is the buyer and the individual believer is the pearl that he sees
as so valuable that he would gladly give everything to have it forever.
These two parables speak of how highly God values the people of his kingdom.
